Food Safety

The role of the Food Safety program is to promote and improve food safety in primary industry sectors by applying legislation and risk management strategies. The aim is to lower the incidence of foodborne illness, while delivering consumer and industry confidence and strengthen market access in South Australia by:

  • Ensuring that primary production and processing businesses across meat, seafood and citrus sectors comply with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Applying compliance and enforcement policy (PDF 59.0 KB ).
  • Developing strong working partnerships with industry stakeholders and other government departments particularly with South Australian Department of Health.

The Dairy Authority of South Australia is a statutory authority, where the key role is to ensure the safety and quality of dairy products in the production and processing sectors of South Australia. This is achieved through monitoring standards and providing efficient, professional and reliable guidance to the dairy industry. The Dairy Authority approves food safety arrangements and accredits dairy farmers, dairy manufacturers and dairy produce carriers.

The Department of Health is the lead agency for food safety in the manufacturing, retail and food service sectors, including issues relating to food composition and labelling.The Department of Health can help with food safety tips, public health and consumer resources.
