(Phalloceros caudimaculatus)Speckled Livebearers (Phalloceros caudimaculatus) are an introduced exotic fish species with the potential to degrade water quality and displace native species. The fish are yellowish in colour, with irregular black spots and are native to eastern South America. They are thought to have been introduced to South Australia through escaped aquarium fish.
The exotic fish was recently found in a 4km stretch of Willunga Creek, South Australia. A 2 month eradication program, from April to May 2010, was conducted involving the treatment of small sections of the creek in stages using an organic, natural substance called Rotenone. Made naturally from tree roots, Rotenone is an odourless, organic compound that affects the gills of fish. It is a comparatively safe treatment and was originally used by indigenous people to hunt fish.
The treatment appears to have been 100% effective; however, Biosecurity SA and SARDI Aquatic Sciences will continue to monitor the area for any repopulation of this pest fish.
It is critical that any sightings of this fish are detected early: please contact Biosecurity SA on 8207 7823 if you see this fish.
The eradication of this pest fish population is the first step in the rehabilitation of the Willunga Creek.
