Health Certificates

Health certification requirements may apply to stock entering South Australia, including the entry of stock into the Bovine Johne's Disease Protected Zone of SA.

Beef Cattle

A Form 1 Health Certificate (.PDF) is required.

Other conditions apply to the movement of beef cattle from Victoria, Tasmania or those areas of NSW not in the declared Protected Zone for Johne's disease. See bovine Johne's disease conditions below.

Buffalo

A Form 1 Health Certificate is required.

Other conditions apply to the movement of buffalo from Victoria, Tasmania or those areas of NSW not in the declared Protected Zone for Johne's disease. See bovine Johne's disease conditions below.

Camelids including Alpacas (South American only)

SA Movement and Health Declaration is required for alpacas entering South Australia.

Use of the SA Movement and Health Declaration is currently an optional requirement for the movement of alpacas within South Australia.

Dairy Cattle

A Form 1 Health Certificate is required.

Other conditions apply to the movement of dairy cattle from all states. See bovine Johne's disease and enzootic bovine leucosis conditions below.

Dairy cattle require a completed Dairy BJD Assurance Score Declaration Form.

Deer

A Form 1 Health Certificate is required.

Other conditions apply to the movement of deer. See bovine Johne's disease conditions below.

Pigs (Swine)

A Form 1 Health Certificate is required.

Pigs originating from Queensland must be from an accredited brucellosis-free herd or have been tested with negative results in the 30 days immediately preceding introduction.

 

Form 1 Special conditions (for beef cattle, buffalo, camelids, dairy cattle, deer, pigs)

If one of the following conditions is met you only need to complete the owner declaration on Form 1:

  • Stock from South Australia, returning direct to South Australia from an interstate show/ sale where Johne’s disease (all species) and Enzootic Bovine Leucosis (EBL) (dairy cattle) restrictions were in place
  • Alpaca returning to South Australia from supervised mating interstate where the mating areas conformed to the Australian Johne’s Disease Market Assurance Program for Alpaca.
  • Stock consigned to the live export trade
  • Stock consigned direct to immediate slaughter at an abattoir
  • Beef cattle from a herd west of the Henty Highway in Victoria, whose Johne’s disease status is not 'Infected' or 'Suspect' and consigned for sale at the Naracoorte or Mt Gambier market

Bovine Johne's disease conditions relating to the movement of beef cattle, buffalo, camelids, dairy cattle and deer

  • The property of origin does not have an 'Infected', 'Suspect' or 'Restricted' status.
  • Cattle entering the Control Zone of South Australia from a Residual Zone must also be accompanied by a 'Declaration of Johne's Disease Status for Cattle/Goats' (BJD Declaration)and be from a Check Tested herd or a herd with a Monitored Negative or Tested Negative status, under the Australian Johne's Disease Market Assurance Program of Cattle.
  • Cattle entering the Protected Zone of South Australia from a Control Zone (either from within South Australia or from interstate) must also be accompanied by a 'National Animal Health Statement for Johne's Disease of Beef Cattle' and be from a Check Tested herd or a herd with a Monitored Negative or Tested Negative status, under the Australian Johne's Disease Market Assurance Program of Cattle.
  • Cattle entering the Protected Zone of South Australia from a Residual Zone must also be accompanied by a 'National Animal Health Statement for Johne's Disease of Beef Cattle'  and be from a herd with a Monitored Negative or Tested Negative status, under the Australian Johne's Disease Market Assurance Program of Cattle, or a 'Beef Only' herd as above.

Enzootic Bovine Leucosis (EBL) conditions relating to dairy cattle only

  • Cattle must originate from a herd with an EBL status of Monitored Free.
  • Animals from a herd with a 'Non-assessed', 'Infected' or 'Suspect' status are not allowed entry unless going direct to slaughter.

Sheep

Sheep from all States must be accompanied by a completed Sheep Health Statement when entering South Australia. The Statement must be in the form of the National Sheep Health Statement.

Sheep introduced for immediate slaughter direct from a saleyard do not require a Sheep Health Statement, however they must be accompanied by a livestock consignment note or waybill.

Footrot

The sheep are to be free from footrot, and have not within a period of one (1) year immediately preceding the date of the declaration been in direct contact with stock infected with footrot, and have not been vaccinated against footrot. 

The Sheep Health Statement must contain a statement in relation to the examination of the sheep for footrot and that no virulent footrot was detected.

Ovine Johne’s Disease (OJD)

Sheep must originate from flocks with a minimum OJD Assurance Based Credit Score of at least four (4) for unrestricted movement into South Australia.

Sheep not from an OJD infected, suspect or restricted flock:

Sheep and lambs introduced for immediate slaughter, there is no minimum OJD Credit Score.  The sheep must be accompanied by a completed Sheep Health Statement unless moving direct from an interstate saleyard.

Sheep and lambs introduced to an approved feedlot, there is no minimum OJD Credit Score and the sheep and lambs must be accompanied by a completed Sheep Health Statement.

Sheep and lambs introduced direct to a property for the purposes of breeding or re-stocking or agistment must have a minimum OJD Credit Score of 4 Credit Points and must be accompanied by a completed Sheep Health Statement.

Sheep and lambs introduced for the purposes of sale at a saleyard must, unless introduced to a saleyard approved by the Chief Inspector, have a minimum OJD Credit Score of 4 Credit Points and must be accompanied by a completed Sheep Health Statement.

Sheep with an OJD Credit Score of 2 or 3 may be introduced direct to a saleyard approved by the Chief Inspector and must be accompanied by a completed Sheep Health Statement.  Sheep with an OJD Credit Score of 2 or 3 must not be removed from the saleyard and moved to a South Australian property without the prior written permission of an Inspector.

Lambs with an OJD Credit Score of less than 4 may be introduced direct to a saleyard approved by the Chief Inspector and lambs born after 1 January 2011 must be tagged with a fluoro pink “T” tag.

Lambs with an OJD Credit Score of less than 4 may be introduced direct to a South Australian property and must either:

  • Be removed from the property direct for slaughter at an abattoir, or to an approved feedlot, before the eruption of their first permanent incisor teeth, or
  • Be removed from the property, before the eruption of their first permanent incisor teeth, direct to a saleyard approved by the Chief Inspector and must be tagged with a fluoro pink “T” tag.

Sheep originating from an infected, suspect or restricted flock:

Sheep may be introduced:

  • for immediate slaughter or an approved feedlot and must be accompanied by a completed Sheep Health Statement and written permission of the Chief Inspector of Stock, or
  • as ‘T’ tag lambs either for sale at a saleyard approved by the Chief Inspector or movement onto a SA property and must be identified with a fluoro pink ear-tag embossed with the letter T in a circle and the Property Identification Code of the property of origin and must be accompanied by a completed Sheep Health Statement and written permission of the Chief Inspector of Stock.

Terminal ‘T’ Tag Lambs

Lambs from a 'Non-assessed' or tested 'Low Prevalence' OJD infected property in the Medium Prevalence Area of South Australia may be moved into the 'Low Prevalence' Area conditional upon:

  • The lambs must be tagged with a fluorescent pink tag embossed with the letter T in a circle and the property identification code of the property of origin
  • The lambs may be sold either privately or through a public market into the 'Low Prevalence' Area on the understanding that the lambs will be slaughtered before the eruption of their first adult teeth
  • The lambs must be accompanied by a Sheep Health Statement and consignment permit

Producers moving sheep and lambs from a flock, within the Low Prevalence Area, with a total assurance based credit score of less than four (4) must obtain the prior written permission of an Inspector of Stock before movement commences. This includes Terminal ‘T’ Tag lambs.

Goats

Goats from all States must be accompanied by a Goat Health Statement when entering South Australia.

Footrot

The goats are to be free from footrot, and have not within a period of one (1) year immediately preceding the date of the declaration been in direct contact with stock infected with footrot, and have not been vaccinated against footrot.

Johne’s Disease: includes both ovine (OJD) and bovine (BJD)

  • For entry into the BJD Protected Zone of South Australia, a minimum assurance rating of 6 is required.
  • For entry into the BJD Control Zone of South Australia, a minimum assurance rating of 5 is required.

Bees and Bee Products

All bees and bee products entering South Australia require a Form 3 Health Certificate. This is a national certificate suitable for entry into other States.
