Emergency animal disease preparedness

PIRSA is responsible for emergency animal disease preparedness within South Australia.

Three main areas of activity

Planning

All planning is done under the auspices of the Australian Veterinary Emergency Plan, AUSVETPLAN. Animal Health Australia maintains the AUSVETPLAN documents.

PIRSA Animal Health has developed its Emergency Animal Disease Action Plan detailing procedures by PIRSA in the event of an animal disease emergency, and the roles of supporting agencies. The Emergency Action Plan is reviewed on an annual basis, and forms part of the Emergency Management document set for PIRSA.

Training

Standards have been developed for all persons likely to be involved in a biosecurity emergency response. PIRSA Animal Health, in conjunction with the PIRSA Emergency Management Coordination Unit, manages a training program, focussing on biosecurity emergency response team development. Regular workshops and simulation exercises are conducted to provide opportunities for further training and skills application.

Biosecurity awareness

PIRSA Animal Health actively promotes good biosecurity practices and emergency animal disease awareness. This is achieved among animal-related professions and industries via presentations in workshops, field days and industry involvement in planning, as well as their participation in, simulation exercises.
