Enhanced Abattoir Surveillance (Sheep)

The Enhanced Abattoir Surveillance (EAS) program was developed to monitor health conditions in South Australian sheep. This program provides information on 20 conditions to identifiable sheep producers who provide sheep or lambs for processing through T&R Pastoral’s export abattoirs at Lobethal and Murray Bridge. Information collected is reported to individual producers via letter, together with information sheets on specific conditions identified.

The 20 conditions have been selected to represent the most commonly observed conditions within the abattoir.

Conditions reported to Animal Health Australia

Thirteen of these conditions are also reported nationally to Animal Health Australia to build up a national database for the sheep industry. These are:

CLA/Cheesy gland (Caseous Lymphadenitis)

Cancer

Dog bites

Bladder worm/False hydatids (Cysticercus tenuicollis/Taenia hydatigena)

Sheep measles (Cysticercus ovis)

Nodule worm/Pimply gut (Oesophagostomum)

Grass seeds

Hydatids (Echinococcus granulosus)

Liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica)

Lungworm

Pneumonia/Pleurisy

Vaccination lesions

Sarco (Sarcocystis)

Conditions reported to SA producers only

The other seven conditions are reported to the South Australian producers only. These are:

Arthritis/Polyarthritis

Jaundice and/or Cirrhosis

Nephritis

Rib fractures

Bruising

Fever/Septicaemia

Program aims

The aim of the program is to enable sheep producers to make management decisions that will help them to maximise their production efficiency and also to increase their profitability.

The EAS program uses data previously collected by Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) and now collected by the abattoir meat inspectors to determine seasonal and regional levels of reported conditions across lambs and mature sheep. The confidentiality of data is maintained, with only information based on aggregated trends provided to industry stakeholders via oral presentations, newsletters, newspaper articles and reports.

The EAS program is endorsed and funded by the National Sheep Industry, South Australian Sheep Advisory Group, AQIS, and Biosecurity SA’s Animal Health section at Primary Industries and Regions SA.
