Alpaca fibre is highly prized for its very soft feel, its high thermal properties, its durability and its variety of natural colours.
The South Australian Alpaca Advisory Group (AAG) provides the Minister with advice on issues affecting the industry - particularly those issues relating to animal health, property registration, industry codes of practice, vendor declarations and supportive regulations wehre necessary.
The AAG are developing a national 'Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Alpacas'. This will set minimum standards (recommended best practice) for the husbandry and welfare of alpacas.
South Australia is leading the nation in the development of the National Livestock Identification System for Alpacas (NLIS-Alpaca).
From 1 July 2006 it will become compulsory for all properties running livestock including alpacas to be registered with PIRSA and be allocated a Property Identification Code (PIC). Application forms are available from PIRSA or by phoning 1800 654 743.
There are currently no known Johnes Disease (JD) affected alpaca herds in Australia. To help keep South Australian alpacas disease free, from 1 July 2007 a SA Movement and Health Declaration will be the required documentation for the movement of alpaca into South Australia. Other special conditions relating to Health Certificates also apply to the movement of alpacas.
Several Fact Sheets about the purchase, breeding and general alpaca husbandry practices are available. These Fact Sheets were developed jointly by PIRSA and the Australian Alpaca Association Inc.
