Disease Control

The Animal Health branch of PIRSA is responsible for the oversight and assistance to industry of matters relating to both national and State based disease control and surveillance programs. Their aim is “Protecting and facilitating market access, livestock productivity, public health and consumer confidence through the health, welfare, quality, safety and image of South Australian livestock and livestock products".

In line with government policy, most disease programs are undertaken in consultation and agreement with the animal industry concerned. These industry advisory groups provide funding, and the Animal Health branch provides expertise, staff and some administrative input.

Disease programs

Identification and movement of animals

To assist with controlling disease there are mandatory requirements in place for the identification and movement of animals. These requirements include Livestock property registration, National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) and Health certificates for animals coming into South Australia.

Emergency disease planning

Disease investigation of new diseases or new problems with old diseases is part of Emergency Disease Planning. Data is collected on endemic disease and regularly reported to the Commonwealth and other State authorities through the National Animal Health Information System (NAHIS). To undertake these functions a disease recording system is essential and this collects field and laboratory information.
