Property Identification Code (PIC) application
SCAHLS (Sub-Committee on Animal Health Laboratory Standards)
Cattle movements between properties with different Property Identification Codes (PICs) must be reported to the NLIS database. This is called a Property to Property transfer (P2P).
Property to Property transfers include:
P2P transfers must be recorded on the database within two working days of cattle being moved.
Producers with more than one property may consider amalgamating those properties under a single PIC if they are managed as a single entity and if located within 80km of each other. This will eliminate the need to transfer cattle on the database when moving cattle between the properties.
While amalgamating properties may eliminate the need to notify the NLIS database of property to property movements, it may result in quarantine for all properties in the event of a disease or residue incident. Consult your local Animal health office for more information.
To transfer cattle on the database you need to have:
The NLIS database will notify both parties, by email only, when a P2P transfer has been recorded.
Remember: P2P transfers must be done within two working days of cattle being moved.

Several options are available for reporting transfers, depending on the facilities and equipment available to each producer.
To transfer cattle on the NLIS database you must first set up your NLIS database account. Setting up your account is easy – to do so visit https://www.nlis.mla.com.au/. Note if you already have an NLIS account (eg for sheep and goat mob-based movements) you don’t need to create another one.
To learn how to use the database to transfer cattle you can:
There are many different brands of readers, scanners and software available to help make transferring cattle easier. Contact the manufacturer to check the compatibility and capabilities of the equipment before purchase.
A third party, such as your agent, can transfer cattle on the database on your behalf. However, do not assume your agent will automatically do the transfers for you. Speak with them and make a formal arrangement.
Download the third-party authorisation form (Form E) or phone 1800 654 743 (select Option 1 for the Helpdesk) to have it sent to you. The third party will require an NLIS user account and will have access to the PICs specified in the application for authorisation.
Paper-based recording using Form A is limited to 20 animals per transfer and costs $14 per form.
Contact the NLIS Database Helpdesk on 1800 654 743 (select Option 1 for the Helpdesk) or email nlis.support@mla.com.au to request Form A.
