NLIS cattle Property To Property Transfers

Cattle movements between properties with different Property Identification Codes (PICs) must be reported to the NLIS database. This is called a Property to Property transfer (P2P).

Property to Property transfers include:

  • moving cattle between your own properties, if those properties have different PICs.
  • buying cattle privately.
  • moving cattle to and from leased property.
  • moving cattle to and from agistment properties.

P2P transfers must be recorded on the database within two working days of cattle being moved.

Producers with more than one property may consider amalgamating those properties under a single PIC if they are managed as a single entity and if located within 80km of each other. This will eliminate the need to transfer cattle on the database when moving cattle between the properties.

While amalgamating properties may eliminate the need to notify the NLIS database of property to property movements, it may result in quarantine for all properties in the event of a disease or residue incident. Consult your local Animal health office for more information.

Information required for transferring cattle on the database

To transfer cattle on the database you need to have:

  • NLIS number (visual number on tag) or Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) number (electronic number that can be scanned) for each animal being transferred.  If you are unsure about the number read the Cattle device number techtip (PDF).
  • PIC of the property that the animals are moving FROM.
  • PIC of the property that the animals are moving TO.
  • National Vendor Declaration (NVD) serial number (if applicable).
  • Transfer date.

The NLIS database will notify both parties, by email only, when a P2P transfer has been recorded.

Remember: P2P transfers must be done within two working days of cattle being moved.

Cattle NLIS tagThe tag image on the left shows the NLIS number printed on the front of the device. This complete number (SA123456LBZ00006) can be used to transfer this animal on the database.

How to report transfers to the NLIS database

Several options are available for reporting transfers, depending on the facilities and equipment available to each producer.

  1. Transferring animals using the NLIS database
  2. Authorising a third party to transfer cattle using the NLIS database
  3. Completing a ‘Form A’ livestock movement form and submitting by fax or mail (for less than 20 animals)

1. Transferring animals using the NLIS database

To transfer cattle on the NLIS database you must first set up your NLIS database account. Setting up your account is easy – to do so visit https://www.nlis.mla.com.au/. Note if you already have an NLIS account (eg for sheep and goat mob-based movements) you don’t need to create another one.

Learn how to use the NLIS database

To learn how to use the database to transfer cattle you can:

Readers, scanners and software for P2P transfers

There are many different brands of readers, scanners and software available to help make transferring cattle easier. Contact the manufacturer to check the compatibility and capabilities of the equipment before purchase.

2. Authorising a third party to transfer cattle using the NLIS database

A third party, such as your agent, can transfer cattle on the database on your behalf. However, do not assume your agent will automatically do the transfers for you. Speak with them and make a formal arrangement.

Download the third-party authorisation form (Form E) or phone 1800 654 743 (select Option 1 for the Helpdesk) to have it sent to you. The third party will require an NLIS user account and will have access to the PICs specified in the application for authorisation.

3. Completing a ‘Form A’ livestock movement form and submitting by fax or mail.

Paper-based recording using Form A is limited to 20 animals per transfer and costs $14 per form.

Contact the NLIS Database Helpdesk on 1800 654 743 (select Option 1 for the Helpdesk) or email nlis.support@mla.com.au to request Form A.
