$11.1 million to support Australian vineyard profitability and management

A new $11.1 million research and development partnership between the State Government and Wine Australia will seek to improve the profitability of the grape and wine sector.


The five year deal will see Wine Australia and PIRSA's South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) investigate disease management, vineyard resilience and performance of different varieties.

Under the strategic partnership agreement, Wine Australia will contribute $6.5 million and the State Government $4.6 million, allowing for longer-term strategic investments which will benefit levy payers and the whole Australian wine sector.

Key grape and wine sector priorities to be addressed under this agreement include new strategies to prevent and control disease, develop innovative irrigation practices to overcome dry conditions and establish trials for new vine species to respond to changing climate conditions.

Background

Wine Australia is a statutory authority, funded by grape growers and winemakers through levies and user-pays charges and the Australian Government.

Wine Australia supports a competitive wine sector by investing in research, development and extension, growing domestic and international markets and protecting the reputation of Australian wine.

The South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), is the research arm of Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA) and is the State Government's principal research institute. SARDI has provided its stakeholders with innovative, world-leading research and development solutions for more than 25 years.

There is no doubt Adelaide is the Wine Capital of Australia, with South Australia producing approximately 50 per cent of the country's grapes, 60 per cent of total exports and almost 80 per cent of Australia's premium wine.
