One product which could be exported prior to meat exports was hides, and these were generally salted and exported raw. The area along the Torrens west of the then saleyards and boiling down works near Thebarton, attracted hide merchants and tanneries. GH Michell Ltd had a large tannery on this site, exporting both salted and treated hides. Environmental standards were minimal at this time and waste found its way into the Torrens River and odour from the works was a local hazard.
