Governing agriculture

Legislation

The legislation for which PIRSA has, and its predecessors have had, administrative responsibility for through the Minister(s) is listed alphabetically and chronologically. Many of the Acts are supported by Regulations and, in some instances, by Notices, Indentures, Codes of Practice, Policies or Directions, but these have not been included here.

There are many Acts that address agricultural and natural resource management matters. Some of these mention such matters in passing or are amending Acts. Not all of the legislation has been incorporated in the lists (for example, where a subsequent amendment to a principal Act is not relevant, generic statute revisions, Crown land legislation or the criminal codes which might stipulate penalties for offences). Thus, researchers on particular historical matters are advised to consult the statute books for Acts that may not be listed.

In 1998 PIRSA had the second largest portfolio of Acts (59) within government to administer (but this included some which were moribund or obsolete and requiring repeal). Acts which have been repealed are also listed to assist researchers, as well as to display the range of legislative action in the agriculture sector.

Federal legislation has been listed also, but as this is not complete people referring to it should undertake further research.

In addition, examples of Acts where limited administrative functions have been committed to other Ministers or States are given. On some topics ‘mirror’ legislation has been enacted by some or all of the Parliaments to ensure, among other things, consistency or national standards.
